Places We Love

The Washington DC area abounds with nature - these are some of our favorite places to explore.

Rock Creek Park is Washington’s forest oasis in the middle of the city. It cools in the summer and delights year-round. We love exploring its trails, sitting by the creek and under its trees, looking for wildflowers and acorns, birding, and breathing in its silence after a snow. The park is also a favorite palace for bikers and runners. Google Maps

Oxon Run Kiddos

This beautiful linear park hosts family picnics and children’s playtime, all under the canopy of its tall trees. We love visiting the Mother’s Peace Garden and its blooming cherry blossoms in spring. Keep an eye out for its wild turkey flock and great blue heron! Google Maps

Hillwood

Hillwood is an historic estate and a botanic garden, and a great place for lunch. We love spending time in its cutting garden, the Japanese-inspired rock garden, its meandering pathways, and the dacha cottages in the forest. Hillwood is sustainably managed and hosts a demonstration pollinator garden. Its mansion is the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. Google Maps

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

Wetlands and woods meet at Kenilworth, near the Anacostia River. We love wandering among its lotus blossoms and cattails, watching children search for turtles, and artists capturing its scenic beauty. It’s a great place for birdwatching and learning about water critters. We also love the free WELLderness classes. Google Maps
