(DMV) (Capital Nature) Join us as we host Alonso Abugattas for a fascinating talk on vernal pools. These temporary wetlands formed by winter snow and rains make a perfect habitat for amphibians like salamanders and wood frogs to lay their eggs. Vernal pools come to life in late winter and early spring before the rest of nature stirs.
Alonso, a renowned DMV naturalist and founder of the Capital Naturalist online community, will talk about conditions that make vernal pools possible, the important ecological role they play in our environment, and the amazing creatures that inhabit them. For an introduction to vernal pool life before the talk, see David Johnson’s short video Ephemeral and his ebook. For good local reads see Alonso’s vernal pools blog, Jerry Nissley’s Fairfax Master Naturalist Nature’s Ephemeral Oases, and Dana Milbank’s feature on salamanders in the Washington Post.
