SUMMARY:Ice Cream Making at Peirce Mill
DESCRIPTION:(DC) (Friends of Peirce Mill) Come learn about old-fashioned ice cream\, made famous by Dolly Madison\, Quaker friend of Betsy Peirce\, and invented by Augustus Jackson\, who was the White House chef from 1817 until 1837. We’ll show how ice cream was made in the early 19th century–and talk about why it was such a rare and special treat. \nKids can watch the ingredients being poured into the dasher\, learn about the brine that freezes the cream\, and take a turn cranking the handle to make old-fashioned ice cream. A historic recipe by Thomas Jefferson with a modern adaptation will be available to take away. After the demonstration\, we’ll have free ice cream treats for the kids!  Rain Date: Sunday\, August 9

SUMMARY:Blossoms in America's Backyard
DESCRIPTION:(DC) (Rock Creek Conservancy) This time of year in Washington\, DC is all about the Cherry Blossoms\, but before the cherry trees on the Tidal Basin were a thing\, the roots of DC’s cherry blossom history got planted in the Rock Creek Valley. Come for a short ranger talk about the history of cherry trees in Washington away from the bustle of the Tidal Basin and then enjoy a walk up to 2 miles through some of our trails to see what’s blooming this spring in Rock Creek Park.

SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Early Detection at Peirce Mill
DESCRIPTION:(DC) (Rock Creek Conservancy) Help the National Capital Region Invasive Plant Management Team\, Rock Creek Park\, and Invader Detectives survey for Corydalis incisa (Incised Fumewort). We will be hiking along the creek on trails south of Peirce Mill and using pin flags and iNaturalist to record any instance of the plant that we find. Corydalis incisa was first detected in Bronx County\, NY in 2005 and has spread rapidly across the East coast ever since. C. incisa forms dense populations that suppress native plant growth. Our goal is to search for and understand the extent of both of this species so we can assess potential responses.
